An animalistic subject painting referable to the tradition of landscape and animal painting developed in Central-Northern Europe in the second half of the 19th century. The scene depicts three cattle — a tawny specimen, a black one, and a spotted white one — drinking in a shallow body of water, framed by willow and shrub vegetation. In the background, a wide plain opens up with grazing flocks and a distant mountain range, under a cloudy sky. The rendering of the animals reveals direct knowledge of the live model, with attention to the volume of the bodies and the chromatic variations of the coat. The brushwork is free in the sky and vegetation, more controlled in the definition of the animal figures. The style shows affinities with German and Central European animal painting of the period.
