S.W. Clifford (British, late 19th century) - Woodland landscape with waterfall.
92 x 61 cm.
Oil on canvas, unframed.
Artwork signed lower left: "S.W. Clifford".
S.W. Clifford is a British painter active in the second half of the 19th century, whose work fits into the tradition of English school romantic landscape painting. His work reveals a solid mastery of atmospheric rendering and a sensitivity in managing light filtering through vegetation, in line with the models of Victorian landscape painting.
The painting depicts a wooded gorge with a stream cascading over moss-covered rocks, while in the background a lattice metal bridge crosses the torrent among the tree branches. The composition is built in depth, with the foreground in shadow progressively opening up towards a bright central area. The brushwork is accurate in rendering the foliage and the moving water, with a well-calibrated palette of greens and browns.
