Oil on canvas, unframed.
Artwork signed lower left: «W. Miller».
W. Miller is a British painter active in the second half of the 19th century, whose work belongs to the tradition of English school Romantic landscape painting. The painting depicts a wooded gorge traversed by a stream flowing placidly among moss-covered granite boulders, while in the background the water ripples into a small rapid. The composition is set in depth along the axis of the watercourse, with the arboreal masses framing the scene laterally and allowing light to filter from the open sky above. The palette, dominated by deep browns and greens, is animated by luminous reflections on the water's surface.
