Lamentation over Christ of the Virgin with Mary Magdalene
Circle of Pietro da Cortona
(Cortona 1596 – Rome 1669)
Oil on canvas
Contemporary gilded and molded frame
Canvas 76 x 102 frame 90 x 117
This beautiful 17th-century painting depicts the dramatic moment when the lifeless body of Christ is laid down from the Cross and lies on the ground on a white sheet.
The erect Mother, with hands in prayer, and the kneeling Magdalene, kissing Jesus' hand, despair in heartbreaking grief.
In the dark sky, a light illuminates three cherubs.
Two putti standing beside Christ display the symbols of the Passion, and their nude bodies with lively flesh tones contrast with the extended, elongated, and bloodless figure.
The play of light and shadow is very pronounced, and the chiaroscuro effect creates the volume of the figures, with a remarkable three-dimensionality to the scene.
The painting should be placed within Roman painting of the 17th century, with clear references to the works of Pietro da Cortona, who influenced a large part of the artists working in the Capital at the time.
A beautiful gilded and molded frame perfectly completes the work.
