Crucifix with ivory Christ in a gilded frame – 18th century

Beautiful crucifix comprising a refined Christ carved from natural ivory, mounted on a gilded wooden cross and set within an important carved and gilded frame.

The Christ, of considerable executive quality, features fine and realistic modeling: particular attention is paid to the anatomy, with accurate rendering of musculature and veins, as well as the intense and pensive expression of the face. The posture, with head bowed and body outstretched, refers to late 18th-century models.

The cross and frame, in carved and gilded wood, are embellished with Baroque decorative motifs and culminate at the top with angelic heads. The red velvet background strongly enhances the sculptural presence of the Christ.
