Description:
Circle of Anton Maria Piola (Genoa, 1654–1715)
Madonna and Child
Genoese school from the second half of the 17th century
Oil on canvas (93 x 74 cm – In ancient frame 110 x 92 cm.)
(Work accompanied by an expertise of Dr. Arabella Cifani)
In the pleasant work presented, depicting a classic Nativity scene, the Madonna is immortalized in adoration, gently holding the sheet on which the Child rests, with a gesture of protection and pride that fosters an atmosphere of intimate recollection, in addition to the presence of three cherubs in the upper part.
The stylistic analysis of the canvas can easily attribute its execution to a painter of the Genoese school active during the 17th century, specifically related to devotional works from the workshop of Domenico Piola (Genoa, 1627-1703), an absolute protagonist of Genoese Baroque culture.
Piola headed the most important painting workshop in the city at the time, known as "Casa Piola," where his sons Paolo Gerolamo and Anton Maria also collaborated.
His production, which specialized in a type of painting with strong decorative value, secular and allegorical, intended for the decoration of Genoese noble palaces, also dedicated itself to a refined series of religious works.
In particular, the style of our beautiful painting comes close to that of his son Anton Maria Piola (Genoa, 1654–1715), who favored intimate devotional compositions and was a continuator of a family painting tradition clearly recognizable in the type of faces with sweet expressions, the rendering of voluminous and opaque drapery, the tendency towards flattening of volumes and space, and the color palette that emphasizes the prevalence of cool tones with a gray-blue dominance. This palette also aligns the apex of luminosity with the spatial center of the scene, which in this case is the Baby Jesus, emanating light with his white swaddling clothes and the gray-blue hues of the Virgin's robe.
