This work of tragic beauty and strong suggestiveness depicts Christ on the cross against a livid sky, emphasizing desolate solitude in the drama of his terrible agony.
A cold light strikes the naked body and the baroque drape that wraps his waist, shaken by the wind.
He is still alive, and his suffering face has eyes wide open to the sky in a human search for help.
He is the "Son of God made Man" who, distraught by pain, turns to the Father to implore him in a moment of despair.
Blood flows from the wounds, and glimmers of light surround the thorn-crowned head.
The sky is dark, obscured by the solar eclipse described by Luke in his Gospel.
The bare landscape surrounding the cross disappears into the darkness of the background and expresses the dramatic dimension into which Christ's emotional condition is immersed.
The author of the painting is a Flemish painter inspired by the very famous "Christ on the Cross" by Anthony van Dyck, who executed several copies with minor variations, one of which is exhibited in Italy, at the Museum of Genoa.
The success of this extremely essential representation, with a single image of great intensity, made it a symbolic iconography of the Christian message and it soon spread throughout Europe.
The canvas published here dates back to the mid-17th century, coeval with Van Dyck's autograph works, created by an excellent artist who captures the same characteristics, with the severe setting and the vehemenent chiaroscuro atmospheric effect.
It is presented in excellent condition, set in a beautiful gilded frame.
