The monumental St. Peter's Square, with its semi-circular colonnades, the ancient Egyptian obelisk, and the Basilica of the Popes, is paired with the surreal image of the Basin of St. Mark's, reflecting its magnificent, unique architecture in the waters of the Lagoon. The two views are executed with excellent pictorial technique, highlighting the great beauty of both the sunlit Vatican square and the varied spectacle of Venetian palaces. The author is a skilled view painter from the late 19th century who describes the architectural features of the famous monuments with great finesse and a notable perspective effect, using an 18th-century style to enhance their charm. The canvases were evidently created to satisfy the requests of foreign visitors to Italian cities who wished to have a souvenir of their "Grand Tour". The works are in excellent condition, complete with beautiful lacquered frames with gilded profiles and sculpted decorations on the corners.
