This splendid pair of oil paintings on canvas depicts two iconic views of Italy's most important and famous cities, admired worldwide for Rome's extraordinary historicity and Venice's unparalleled dreamlike beauty.
The monumental Saint Peter's Square, with its semicircular colonnades, the ancient Egyptian obelisk, and the Basilica of the Popes, is harmoniously paired with the surreal image of the Basin of Saint Mark, reflecting its magnificent and unique architecture in the waters of the lagoon.
Both views are executed with excellent pictorial technique, highlighting the great beauty of both the sun-drenched Vatican square and the varied spectacle of Venetian palaces.
The artist is a skilled vedutista (view painter) from the late 19th century, who describes the architectural features of the celebrated monuments with great finesse and a remarkable sense of perspective, employing a 18th-century style to enhance their charm.
The canvases were evidently created to satisfy the demands of foreign visitors to Italian cities who wished to have a memento of their "Grand Tour."
The works are in excellent condition, complete with beautiful lacquered frames with gilded profiles and carved decorations on the corners.
