Elegant Chinese Screen "Coromandel" – 1950s
Splendid four-panel screen in black lacquered wood, dating back to the mid-20th century (circa 1950). This piece represents a perfect blend of traditional Oriental art and Mid-Century decorative taste, ideal as a room divider or as a dramatic headboard.
Main Features
Front (Polychrome Decoration): The main side features a refined, "full-field" natural scene that unfolds across all panels. The decoration, hand-engraved and painted with subtle pigments, depicts the classic "Flowers and Birds" theme:
Symbolism: Branches of flowering peach/cherry trees (symbol of rebirth), lush peonies (symbol of nobility and wealth), and various bird species, including pheasants and cranes, are depicted with great attention to feather detail.
Technique: The incised work creates a slight relief that adds depth and dynamism to the composition under light.
Back (Minimalist Decoration): The back is finished in satin black lacquer and decorated with elegant gold line motifs. Each panel encloses a cartouche with stylized botanicals (bamboo, orchids, plum blossoms), offering a sober and refined alternative if placed in the center of a room.
Structure and Details:
Feet: The bases are protected by original brass terminals, which shield the wood from moisture and wear.
Hinges: Original brass hinges allow for smooth accordion-like folding.
Condition
The screen is in excellent vintage condition. The lacquer retains a beautiful sheen; there are slight and normal signs of age on the surface and edges, attesting to its authenticity and era, without compromising its aesthetics.
