Large winged angels from the Baroque era, Rome, 17th century  Translated
Description:
A pair of spectacular winged angels from the Baroque period Circle of Gian Lorenzo Bernini (1598-1680) Rome, Mid-17th Century Carved wood in the round, gilded and polychrome Height: 88 cm, Width 50 cm, Depth 60 cm. Complete details (click HERE) A splendid pair of polychrome and gilded carved wooden angels, a true masterpiece from the mid-17th century intended for connoisseurs of high-level sculptural works, originating from a prestigious private collection. Regarding their provenance, these sculptures, presumably originally placed on the sides of an altar in the presbytery area, are situated within the context of the most refined Roman Baroque production. The vigorous plasticity of the drapery that sinuously envelops the figures, the intense expressiveness of the faces, captured by a divine vision, and the incisiveness with which the feathered cloaks of the large spread wings or the thick locks of hair are carved, recall the most illustrious prototypes of the statuary of one of the greatest protagonists of the Baroque season, Gian Lorenzo Bernini (1598-1680), from whom our anonymous sculptor skillfully drew compositional inspiration and formal solutions. Therefore, it can be considered that the two wooden statues in question were produced in a Roman workshop in the second half of the 17th century by an artist trained in Bernini's style, distinguished by that sumptuous style that dominated the European scene throughout the century, with strong affinities to the works of Ercole Antonio Raggi, known as il Lombardo (Vico Morcote, 1624 – Rome, 1686) or Ercole Ferrata (Pellio Intelvi 1610 – Rome, July 10, 1686). Our sculptures are therefore a tribute to the Italian 17th century in the purest Baroque style, of rare beauty, a testament to the glory, faith, and grandeur of the Eternal City. The presence of a large part of their original polychromy and gilding, marked by a pleasing craquelure, is extraordinary. We can affirm that, for their period and condition, they are collector's items, rare on the market, and of great scenic effect, which will enhance and amplify the beauty of the home they will adorn. Good state of conservation, original gilding and polychromy. Accompanied by original expertise and historical authenticity (FIMA). For any further information, please contact us.
