(Haarlem, 1637 - Milan, 1701) Circle
Oil on canvas
Period frame
Canvas 96 x 72 cm
Frame 113 x 88 cm
Excellent condition
The painting depicts a vast night panorama, typical of the Mediterranean hinterland, where a cylindrical tower stands out as the protagonist, rising in the center of the canvas among a series of fortified villages.
The scene is illuminated laterally by the glow of moonlight, creating a very evocative chiaroscuro effect.
The canvas is to be attributed to the Flemish landscape painter Pieter Mulier, known as the "Tempest Knight" following his stay in Italy, where he worked and trained artistically, first in Rome, then in Genoa, attracted by the sea and the Ligurian landscape, and finally in Milan until his death.
His works confirmed his restless spirit and were mainly divided between the depiction of landscapes characterized by an unstable and never serene atmosphere, and tempestuous seascapes, often at night and under the moonlight.
The canvas presented here depicts a wide-ranging nocturnal view and is distinguished by a pleasant sensation of tranquility, with fishermen silently by the water, enlivening and coloring the scene.
