Vincenzo Colleoni (Active in Venice in the second half of the 19th century) - Interior scene with masked figures.
Description:
Vincenzo Colleoni (Active in Venice in the second half of the 19th century) - Interior scene with masked figures. 110 x 160 cm (unframed) - 145 x 194 cm (framed). Oil on canvas, in a gilded wooden frame. Artwork signed lower left: "V. Colleoni". Vincenzo Colleoni was a Venetian painter active in the second half of the 19th century, belonging to the Realism movement. This movement expressed itself in opposition to Romanticism and Neoclassicism, seeking to depict daily life and reality with a more objective and less idealized approach. Unfortunately, not many sources have survived concerning Colleoni, and he is among those artists who still require more in-depth critical study. We know that he exhibited at the National Exhibition in Parma in 1870 with the painting "The Annoying Dog" and in Naples in 1877, where he presented five works titled: "Visit to a Painter's Studio," "Pearl Stringer," "Street Performers," "A Ray of Sunshine After the Rain," and "Childhood Joys." In our painting, signed in red by the artist, we find a dynamic interior scene where the two female figures in the center are fending off a crowd of masked characters who are very curious and interested in seeing up close the swaddled infant in the left corner of the canvas. Even in the dim light, a nurse is pushing away a character with a hat. The costumes suggest a social event, while the laughter and strong curiosity of those present allow us to imagine a scandal related to the birth of this infant. Condition report: Original canvas.
