Bentwood and carved armchair - Jacob & Josef Kohn, Vienna 1903/1904.
72 x 54 x h 84 cm.
Bentwood and carved wood, original Vienna cane seat with spring mechanism.
Office armchair with a swiveling and tilting seat, produced by the Viennese workshop Jacob & Josef Kohn in the early 20th century. The structure is made of bentwood using the Thonet technique, with a turned slat backrest, a carved top rail with volutes, and arched armrests connected to the frame in a continuous flow. The circular seat, made of original Vienna cane, is equipped with a spring mechanism that allows automatic tilting based on the user's weight – a patented solution advertised in the Kohn catalogs of 1903 and 1904 as "Neigefauteuil" (self-tilting armchair). The shaped and flared legs are connected by a curved reinforcing ring. The piece is documented in the 1904 Kohn catalog, model No. 705.
Condition report: Good general condition. Original Vienna cane seat intact. Minor signs of wear on the wooden structure, consistent with the age of the piece.
