Early 1900s Oriental Deity Wooden Sculpture
Description:
Early 1900s Oriental Deity Wooden Sculpture crafted from a hard, heavy wood with vertical grain. The sculpture exhibits Oriental influences in the carved decorations of the belt and base, as well as in the almond-shaped eyes. Concurrently, the facial features and the macrocephalic skull suggest an African origin. Therefore, we cannot definitively identify the origin or identity of the sculpture, which, however, emanates a strong spirituality from its sketched smile. From the fire marks present on the left side, we presume the statue was venerated in a private altar, alongside candles and votive lights. It comes from the collection of a Milanese traveler and has been cleaned and waxed.
