Italian sculptor (15th-16th century) — Bust of Christ.
34 x 20 x h 44 cm.
Carved stone with traces of polychromy.
- This carved stone bust depicts the face of Christ with a plastic quality of considerable expressive intensity, attributable to Italian sculptural production between the 15th and 16th centuries. It features physiognomic traits of great strength, such as the face, framed by flowing hair in wavy locks that fall onto the shoulders, and a beard rendered with skillful naturalistic attention. The bust is finished with radial drapery converging towards the neck, a formal solution frequent in late medieval and Renaissance plastic devotion. The surface retains traces of original polychromy, discernible as remnants of a refined pictorial application that originally enhanced its devotional preciousness. Some chips and signs of age testify to the authenticity and long history of the work.
