Portrait of a boy, Lombard School (SOLD)
Description:
Lombard School, 17th century. Portrait of a boy with an apple. Oil on canvas. 109 x 78 cm - 127 x 97 cm. with frame. Complete details of the painting (click HERE). The protagonist of the offered canvas is a chubby child, approximately five years old, a young member of a 17th-century aristocratic family. He wears sumptuous yet sober clothing, consisting of a wide, short, bell-shaped cape with trim and gold buttons, covering a red-toned garment. Analysis of the details of this beautiful portrait, particularly the stylistic approach in rendering his features, points to the great tradition of the 17th-century Lombard school. However, there are also influences from Spanish fashion in the details of the clothing, which is quite plausible given that Spain dominated Europe during this historical period, not only politically but also in terms of fashion and customs (especially in Lombardy, which was under Spanish rule). The golden detail of the buttons and the red of the garment, a color echoed in the stockings and the bow tying his shoes, stand out against the almost monochromatic, essential background. The apple held in his hand is interesting; traditionally, referencing the Apple of Venus, it was included in portraits as a symbol of good omen, alluding to a future marriage. In wealthy families, it was customary to arrange unions between descendants of noble houses at a young age to mutually strengthen their power. Perhaps the painting was intended as a marriage proposal, commissioned as an introduction of a young gentleman to the bride's family. Besides the apple, he holds a hat under his arm, as if to emphasize his future status as a full member of high society. Although it exhibits the rigor and austerity typical of portraiture from this period, these qualities are softened by the innocent expression on his face, gazing at the viewer with a typically childlike sweetness.
