Oil on panel from the second half of the 16th century depicting an original representation of a court jester or other grotesque character. The painting's setting, between a figure portrait and a genre scene, seems to propose the Flemish models of the Troonie, where low and marginal figures, strongly characterized, are mostly portrayed, and which will spread mostly in the 17th century.
Nevertheless, the painting can be attributed, due to figurative and stylistic similarities, to the production of the painter Niccolò Frangipane (documented from 1563 to 1597) or to his close circle. Active in north-eastern Italy in Friuli, Veneto and Romagna.
