Rare and decorative painted 18th-century credenza with hutch, in practically intact condition.
Description:
Rare and decorative painted 18th-century credenza with hutch, in practically intact condition. Never restored. Austro-Hungarian Empire, likely from the Salzburg area, Upper Austria, or Southern Bohemia. Features a rare painted scene depicting a castle or castle chapel (rare for this type of "Bauernmoebel" furniture, which more frequently depicted flowers or religious subjects). Also noteworthy and rare is the yellow background with a design imitating the grain of fine woods. Austrian painted furniture with this type of background treatment is very rare and sought after. Works with original and unrestored painting are very rare and now preserved almost exclusively in museums. Austria, 18th-century folk art, likely the first half, as can be seen from the hardware, patina, production technique, pigment oxidation, and the base of the hutch with a Rococo-style movement in the niche. Max. width 88 cm, max. height 170 cm, max. base depth 38 cm, max. hutch depth 32 cm, hutch height alone 81 cm, max. hutch width 81 cm. Perfect for pairing with high-end modern furnishings for an ensemble of original and refined elegance (see simulation at the bottom of the page). NOTES and EXPERT ANALYSIS: - The structure, hardware, and style of the painted decoration, as written, fully confirm the dating to the 18th century. - The background of the furniture that imitates precious wood with reddish waves is peculiar to the area of Upper Austria (such as the area of Wels or Steyr) and the Salzburg area. Floral motifs: The central vase with flowers and the lateral branches on a rectangular background are classic of Tyrolean and Austrian decoration, but similar variations were also carried out in southern Bohemia. - These niches that housed the representation of a church or a sanctuary (references to Maria Zell in Austria were very common) served to give the furniture a function of "domestic altar", also confirmed by the original period votive images glued in the upper door. Sometimes the interior was painted dark to highlight a religious statuette or a precious object that was placed there. - The vase of flowers in the center is not only decorative; in 18th-century folk art it represents the prosperity and "flowering" of the family. Observe the last photo of this sheet, which is a computer simulation of fantasy where the work is imagined in a high-end modern furnishing context. A surprising "modernity", luminosity and abstraction emerge for a work conceived over two centuries ago. With a great touch of class and elegance to the whole In accordance with the provisions of the New Code of Cultural Heritage, the selling company provides simultaneously with the sale detailed written photographic guarantee of originality and provenance of the works sold. The data with which the works are described and then contained in the written guarantees are expressed determinations resulting from accurate and documented technical / historical / artistic investigations, including expert surveys.
