FEMALE FIGURE ON ARMCHAIR - GIUSEPPE GAMBOGI - (1862 - 1933)
Description:
Giuseppe Gambogi (1862–1933) – Elegant Alabaster Sculpture Work Description Refined antique alabaster sculpture, depicting a young woman in a moment of intimate abandon and relaxation. The figure is softly reclining on an upholstered armchair (likely a bergère), with her arms raised behind her head in a gesture of spontaneous sensuality, her eyes half-closed in a dreamy expression. The work is an excellent example of the Art Nouveau style, characterized by fluid lines and particular attention to the grace of the female form. Gambogi's mastery is clearly evident in the treatment of details: The drapery: The light garment clings to the body, delicately defining the forms. The material contrast: The smooth finish of the skin harmoniously contrasts with the finely worked texture of the armchair's cushions and fringes. The pose: The pyramidal composition, although dynamic in the torso's twist, conveys a profound sense of calm and bourgeois luxury. Technical Details Author: Giuseppe Gambogi (Signed on the side: G. Gambogi). Material: Statuary alabaster. Period: Late 19th / Early 20th Century (circa 1900-1910). Condition: Excellent general condition. The natural patina of time enhances the depth of the volumes. Small natural veins inherent to the material, guaranteeing its authenticity, are visible. Dimensions: Height 25 cm, depth 21 cm, width 15 cm Biographical Notes on the Artist Giuseppe Gambogi (Livorno, 1862 – 1933) was an internationally renowned Italian sculptor, belonging to that circle of Tuscan artists who made the working of alabaster and marble famous between Florence and Pisa. Trained within the Tuscan realism movement, Gambogi specialized in genre subjects, female figures, and elegant genre scenes. His production achieved enormous success in the European and American markets of the time, thanks to his ability to blend academic classicism with the new trends of Art Nouveau. His works are sought after by collectors for the incredible "softness" he managed to impart to stone materials, making the stone almost vibrate with life.
