An important Spanish painting from the mid-17th century. Oil on canvas artwork depicting an episode from the Gospel of Luke, Christ's appearance to the disciples on the road to Emmaus. The artwork captures a moment preceding the famous supper, a rarely depicted event. On the very day of the Resurrection, two disciples are leaving Jerusalem for the village of Emmaus.
They are despairing over the death of the Messiah, but as they walk, a traveler reaches them and explains the Scriptures, rekindling their inner flame. They will recognize Jesus only later during the supper, when he breaks the bread, but the truth is emerging, and this is precisely the moment depicted in the canvas. A painting of remarkable pictorial quality, particularly notable for the rendering of the hands and draperies. The disciples are depicted as pilgrims, with naturalism and strong psychological insight, while Christ's face is idealized.
Scenographic 20th-century wooden frame, beautifully decorated, with some signs of aging. A painting of great spiritual inspiration, ideal for elegant, classical or contemporary spaces.
