Description:
Oil on sheet metal, applied to a wooden panel. Central European school of the 17th-18th century. In the scene, a wealthy lady, aided by maids, is washing the feet of an elderly man, under the astonished gaze of some other gentlemen. It is not the traditional evangelical washing of feet, known as the anointing at Bethany, because the age of the man whose feet are being washed does not refer to Jesus, but the gesture performed has the same value. The washing of feet is a gesture of service and humility, an act of servile submission which, following Jesus' example at the Last Supper (but also that of Magdalene at Bethany!), has taken on a meaning of love and respect. The scene could refer to some unidentified historical - literary episode.
