Refined and rare inlaid game table from Viennese Classicism. Austria circa 1770.  Translated
Description:
Refined and rare game table from Viennese Classicism. Austria circa 1770. It is a perfectly preserved piece, masterfully veneered and inlaid in a figurative manner with exotic and fruit woods (rosewood, likely of the Nectranda Mollis and Piptadenia Svaveolens varieties), plum wood, ebony, burr maple, etc. The figurative inlay, with vase and festoon motifs typical of the period, is enriched with details worked in pyrography and with soot. The tabletop measures 96 x 70 cm, height 77 cm. The work, in practically intact condition, has undergone professional conservative restoration, consisting of the exclusive "refreshment of the French polishing with shellac on the original patina using museum-standard techniques, resulting in a warm and vibrant honey-amber color. There are 4 small drawers in the sides for chips and/or playing cards. Observations: A piece of high 18th-century cabinetmaking with figurative inlay of a very high executive level. Note the beauty and details of the vase in the center of the top with motifs inspired by Greco-Roman antiquity, which was very fashionable throughout Europe during the period. This was after the discovery, in those years, of the buried city of Pompeii. The international spread and birth of Neoclassical taste are due to the "Letters from Pompeii" and the 1764 book "History of Ancient Art" by Johann Wincklmann, a German architect and archaeologist who lived in Italy for a long time.
