Painting with Saint Joachim and the Angel
Description:
Oil on canvas. Lombard school from the late 16th century. The large scene depicts an angel in the foreground announcing the upcoming birth of his daughter to Joachim while he grazes his sheep; in the background, Joachim meets and embraces his wife Anne, who awaits him at the gates of a city: according to tradition, the two spouses, considered sterile, after both receiving a visit from an angel, meet at the Golden Gate (of Jerusalem), symbolizing the beginning of salvation through the conception of Mary, the future mother of Jesus. The profile of the city in the background leads back to Cremona, probably the city of the commissioner of the artwork, where Giovan Battista Trotti, known as il Malosso (1555 -1619), a Mannerist painter, lived and worked, to whom the artwork refers in style, allowing us to formulate an attribution hypothesis to him or his workshop. The artwork, previously relined, has slight color losses. It is presented with a batten frame.
