This beautiful painting on canvas depicts the dramatic scene of the crucifixion, with the three most representative figures from the final part of Christ's earthly life.
Following traditional canons, the Mother on the left despairs and prays with clasped hands, Mary Magdalene is kneeling at the foot of the cross, and St. John the Evangelist, the beloved Apostle, observes the grieving women on the right.
Two cherubs participate in the scene, positioned on either side of the Cross.
It is a typical Flemish work from the 17th century that describes with remarkable elegance one of the most frequently depicted themes by Masters throughout Europe.
Suggestions drawn from Italian painting are evident, particularly from the Emilian school of Guido Reni and the Carracci.
