Refined inlaid commode from the Neoclassical period. Vienna, circa 1770.
Description:
Vienna, circa 1770. Rare and refined commode in original patina from the Neoclassical period. Veneered in walnut burl with a magnificent blonde hue, with delicate geometric inlays made of maple and plum wood, typical of the era. Featuring original canted corners with decorative motifs of stylized columns in a darker shade. A refined piece of furniture commissioned by a Viennese noble family. Restored, consolidated, and French polished with shellac using a museum-standard technique on the original, fully preserved antique patina. Dimensions: H - 91 cm, W - 130 cm, D - 64 cm.
With a warm honey-golden-amber color, from the original patina and the masterful shellac finish. More beautiful in person than in photos.
Observe the second photo in this listing, which is a computer-generated simulation imagining the piece in a high-end modern furnishing context. A surprising "modernity," luminosity, and abstraction emerge for a piece conceived over two centuries ago, as well as a great touch of class and elegance to the ensemble. The high Viennese antique cabinetmaking, with its sober and minimal elegance, is very connected to the lines of modern furniture.
