Venetian school, Bassano area, Adoration of the Shepherds with the Holy Family
Dimensions: : 33.5 cm,: 26 cm
Description:
Venetian school, Bassano area, Adoration of the Shepherds with the Holy Family Oil on canvas The painting depicts the Adoration of the Shepherds with the Holy Family, set in a rustic interior with wooden architectures and the presence of animals, according to an iconography widely spread in the Venetian pictorial tradition of the Bassano area between the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. The scene is animated by numerous figures arranged on several levels, with angels in glory in the upper part, according to a compositional construction derived from the models of the Bassano workshop. The iconographic layout, the narrative rendering of the subject, the rural setting and the central role of animals convincingly refer to the figurative culture developed around Jacopo Bassano and his sons, whose influence spread widely throughout the Venetian territory through workshops, followers and interpreters of medium level. The work is therefore placed within a devotional production of tradition, presumably intended for a private commission. From a stylistic point of view, the painting presents an unequal execution quality, with a pictorial drafting sometimes summary and simplified, especially in the faces and anatomies, but retains an articulated and coherent composition, a warm and well-balanced color scheme and a clear narrative reading. These characteristics are compatible with a workshop or area production, rather than with an autograph hand. The work is made in oil on canvas and has been the subject of an ancient re-lining, probably carried out between the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, now stable and well integrated. The frame is later and not coeval. The state of conservation is generally good, with natural widespread craquelure and patina consistent with the age of the painting; there are no obvious invasive modern interventions. Work of Venetian sacred painting between the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries, representative of the long fortune of the Bassano models and appreciable for the subject, the devotional character and the historical-artistic context of reference.
