Tobias and the Archangel Raphael in a woodland landscape, oil on canvas, Genoa early 18th century
Description:
Painting of panoramic format, in which the biblical episode of young Tobias guided and instructed by the Archangel Raphael (Tobit 6:3) is set in a vast natural scenario. The scene is concentrated in the foreground: the two figures, close together and illuminated together with the fish that faith will transform into a miraculous instrument, emerge from the landscape while the angel points the way, making the journey an image of protection and spiritual guidance.
The true protagonist, however, is the woodland landscape, constructed with depth and atmosphere: leafy trees, clearings, streams and distant hills create a visual path that leads the eye towards the horizon. The contrast between warm lights and deep shadows and the lively rendering of the sky give the composition a theatrical and sentimental character, typical of the late Baroque sensibility. The result is a discreet narration, immersed in nature, where the theme of divine guidance is translated into a harmony between figure and environment.
