Oil on canvas. The work reproduces, in counterpart, the well-known painting by Francesco Trevisani now kept at the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Antica in Palazzo Barberini. In this variant, small images are added at the bottom right and left. The Madonna is depicted intent on a dual gesture: with one arm she tenderly supports the sleeping baby Jesus, abandoned against her and with his little hand resting on a red apple, a symbol of salvation (the apple recalls original sin); with the other hand Mary holds a book, presumably of prayers, which she reads with intensity and great concentration. Therefore, both the human, carnal dimension and the spiritual dimension of Mary are depicted. Already restored and relined in the past, the painting is presented in a stylish frame.
