Venetian mirror light in carved and gilded wood, late 18th – early 19th century
Description:
Elegant Venetian mirror light, datable between the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, made of finely carved and gilded wood leaf, with a rich ornamental apparatus in late Baroque style, already projected towards neoclassical sensibilities.
The structure has a shaped and dynamic frame, entirely carved with spirals, foliage and rocaille motifs, culminating in the upper part with an elegant openwork crest. The gilding, particularly rich and bright, appears to have been restored during the nineteenth century, according to a common practice for this type of furniture, while maintaining a remarkable executive quality and excellent decorative performance.
The mirror light has three candle holder arms, made with a combination of iron and carved wood, originally intended for open flame use and subsequently electrified, with a structure coherent and well integrated into the whole.
The mirror is original to mercury, now markedly compromised by alterations and abrasions due to the heat of the candles, a frequent and historically coherent condition for mirror lights of this type. The back is original, intact and well preserved.
Overall, a Venetian mirror light of great decorative charm, authentic and scenographic, ideal as a furnishing element of strong character.
