Large Japanese Imari Plate – Meiji Period (19th Century)
A splendid example of large-sized Imari porcelain, characterized by a refined decoration in underglaze cobalt blue and overglaze enamels in shades of iron red and pure gold. The plate has a mixtilinear or lobed edge, typical of production intended for export to the West.
Decorative Analysis
The decoration is organized into a complex composition in sectors that recalls the motif of open fans:
Well (Center): Presents a central medallion with a stylized floral motif surrounded by thin and symmetrical vegetal spirals.
Rim and Face: The surface is richly historiated with fan-shaped (Ogi) reserves that enclose classic natural scenes from the Japanese tradition: pine branches (matsu), cherry blossoms (sakura) and bamboo canes. These elements, symbols of longevity and resilience, are rendered with precise and detailed brushstrokes.
Filling Motifs: The spaces between the fans are filled with typical geometric motifs (shippo and asanoha) and floral decorations in red enamel on a blue background, enriched with touches of gold that give brightness and depth.
Back: The reverse of the plate is decorated with four floral branches in underglaze blue and has the typical unglazed foot, a sign of authentic manufacture.
State of Conservation
The plate is in excellent general condition. The brilliance of the enamels is well preserved and the gilding shows only minimal signs of the time consistent with the era. There are no visible hairlines or chips visible from the images.
