Niccolò Cannicci (Florence 1846 - 1906) - Landscape
Description:
Small oil painting on board, signed lower right. Panel dimensions: 18x11cm. Dimensions with frame: 30x25cm. Niccolò Cannicci was born on October 29, 1846, in Florence. After his initial painting studies with his father, Cannicci attended the Academy of Fine Arts in his city under the guidance of Enrico Pollastrini. Later, he sporadically studied at the Free School of the Nude. In 1868, the painter retired to his father's house in Poggetto, where he dedicated himself to the study of nature and the preservation of local artistic heritage. His early works followed purist canons without rejecting a realist approach. Cannicci regularly participated in official and periodic art exhibitions and was also present at the Venice International Exposition. At the end of 1891, the painter was admitted to the Siena asylum for a long period, and from this experience was born "Album with portraits of mental patients," which he gifted to his patron and friend, Diego Martelli. The artist died in Florence on January 19, 1906. His works are now found in private Italian and foreign collections and in Italian museums.
