Barocchetto style marquetry wooden center table, Genoa, Second half of the 19th century
Description:
Barocchetto style marquetry wooden center table, Genoa, Second half of the 19th century Dimensions: cm L 56.5 x D 39 x H 84.5 Price: by private negotiation Item accompanied by our certificate of authenticity Refined Genoese center table in marquetry wood, made in the second half of the 19th century in Barocchetto style, inspired by 18th-century models of great Ligurian cabinetmaking. The piece is finely inlaid with rosewood, with precious cloverleaf motifs in violet wood, arranged with great decorative balance on the fronts and sides. The marquetry is present on all four sides, a characteristic that allows the piece to be placed in the center of rooms, as a focal point of the space. The architecture of the piece is dynamic and articulated, with shaped and molded sides that, on three sides, surpass the top surface, creating a sort of protective frame. This feature, in addition to enhancing the dynamic profile in the Barocchetto style, also has a practical function, as it prevents objects placed on the surface from falling, making the piece particularly suitable for daily use while maintaining a strong formal elegance. Below the top surface is a pull-out drawer, conceived as a small pull-out desk, a functional and elegant solution that enhances the use of the piece without compromising its formal lightness. On the front, the structure is organized with an open compartment at the top, flanked below by two doors that conceal a spacious internal compartment, ideal for storing small objects or documents. The slender and curved legs end in gilded bronze sabots, in harmony with the handles on the sides, used for moving the piece, made of finely chased bronze with rocaille motifs. The cloverleaf motif is a decorative element strongly linked to Genoese tradition, used since the 18th century in the finest furniture. In addition to its ornamental value, the cloverleaf symbolically recalls harmony, balance, and prosperity, and is often associated with high-commissioned production, both aristocratic and upper-bourgeois. The choice of violet wood, for chromatic contrast and prestige, further underscores its decorative importance. Overall, a piece of great elegance, capable of dialoguing with both classic and contemporary interiors, ideal for living rooms, studies, bedrooms, or reception areas, where it can be appreciated from all sides. It can also be placed next to a bed and used as a bedside table.
