"Moro" Venetian Lampholder
Description:
Polychrome and gilded wooden sculpture. Venice, 19th century. Total height 210 cm. Column 90 cm. Excellent condition. A beautiful and important "Moro" Venetian sculpture depicting a female figure, finely carved and lacquered in particularly elaborate and colorful polychromy. The black slave is adorned with a livery rich in decorations with geometric embroidery and floral designs. Her tight bodice reveals seminude breasts, while her right hand is raised to hold a spherical lamp. The figure stands on a tripod base with animalistic legs. It rests on a splendid twisted column elegantly decorated with a gilded band with a foliate motif, an octagonal capital, and plinth. It is a rare and sought-after furnishing because, in addition to being very decorative, it is a testament to an era when Venice wished to assert its dominance in the Mediterranean and its superiority over dark-skinned peoples. Sculptures of "Mori" and "Indiani" in a subservient and submissive posture were proudly displayed in the palaces of the Serenissima and conveyed a message of wealth and power. The female figure is quite rare. We emphasize the excellent condition and complete originality of the entire structure, as well as the presence of perfectly functioning electrification with the original 19th-century glass lamp. A certificate of authenticity will be issued in accordance with the law (FIMA affiliated). Delivery within 3 working days of receipt of the bank transfer (DHL EXPRESS). Price negotiable - Personalized payment. All photographic details of the work can be found at the link: https://www.antichitaischia.it/it/prodotto/-moretto--veneziano-su-colonna--
