Vienna circa 1815. Important weekly in burl maple with "bird's eye" pattern, in perfect condition. High Viennese cabinet making of the Empire in transition with the early Biedermeier.
Description:
Vienna, circa 1815. Of museum rarity and quality, especially for its preserved condition and absolute integrity, this is a weekly chest of drawers from the very early Viennese Biedermeier period, veneered in the rare and precious essence of maple burl, called bird's eye. The piece of furniture is in its original, warm and golden patina. It formerly belonged to the high Viennese nobility. The lateral columns are admirable, meticulously veneered in a helical fashion with fragments, opposing the grain. The effect and warmth of this precious essence combined with the patina accumulated over the centuries, polished with shellac applied with a pad using a museum-standard technique, are truly extraordinary. Bird's eye maple burl is an essence that was normally used in small quantities in the inlay and decoration of cabinets and secretaires. Its use on the entire surface of the furniture is very rare and testifies to the high rank of the client. It measures cm. 179 high, 112 wide, 54 deep. Notes: The rather "impressive" dimensions compared to the more common smaller weekly editions of the early Biedermeier period suggest an original location in a noble castle rather than a smaller home of the emerging bourgeoisie and, moreover, bring it closer to the early Viennese Empire than to the early Biedermeier. The high commission is also evident from the quality of the essence and the cabinet making is very accurate in the details (see the veneering of the columns made in a helical fragment way). Finally, look at the last photo of this card, which is our fanciful computer simulation where the work is imagined in a modern high-end furnishing context. A "modernity", brightness, and abstraction emerge that are surprising for a work conceived two centuries ago, as well as a great touch of class and elegance to the whole. The high old Viennese cabinet making, especially of the neoclassical period of the restoration, with its sober and minimal elegance, is very much linked to the lines of modern furniture. In accordance with the provisions of the New Code of Cultural Heritage, the selling company provides, simultaneously with the sale, a detailed written photographic guarantee of originality and provenance of the works sold. The data with which the works are described and then contained in the written guarantees are expressed determinations resulting from accurate and documented technical/historical/artistic investigations, even of a peritial nature.
