The fascinating panel painting, belonging to the late Mannerist Ferrarese painting (1580/1600) offers us, with a dramatic and visionary language, a rare subject of strong eschatological impact: “The Vision of the Prophet Ezekiel”.
The prophet Ezekiel, wrapped in a cloak moved by a supernatural wind, raises his gaze towards the divine light while prophesying to the dried bones, which recompose, are covered with flesh and spirit, and rise again as an army. The “crowd of the risen” in the distance is rendered in a fairytale and macabre way together, very representative of the spiritual and visionary climate of the Ferrarese painting of the late sixteenth century.
