Description:
Original late 18th-century Tyrolean wardrobe, dated 1789, made of softwood and characterized by a rich polychrome painted decoration.
The structure has two hinged doors, with chamfers on the sides, a typical solution in the Alpine area to visually lighten the mass and improve integration into domestic environments. The upper hat is shaped and projecting, with painted molded frames, while the base has a continuous molded plinth.
The front doors are punctuated by framed panels with painted frames in shades of pink and green. In the upper panels there are monograms, apotropaic symbols, flanked by initials and the dating "1789" painted on the upper frieze. The lower panels feature stylized floral motifs, executed with a free and decorative brushstroke.
The sides are also painted, with vertical cartouches and vegetal and dotted ornamental motifs, a sign of a complete decorative concept, designed to make the wardrobe visible and decorative even laterally, as often happened in Tyrolean stube. The dominant color is a dull green-grey, obtained from natural pigments, now harmoniously patinated by time, with outcroppings of the preparation and the underlying hand.
The hardware is original: hinges, handles and escutcheons in wrought iron. The date is present in the left escutcheon. Inside, the wardrobe retains a functional mixed structure, with shelves on the left side and a wardrobe compartment on the other, as well as small upper drawers made in the thickness, a practical but also distinctive element of period Alpine furniture.
