Annunciation, Ciro Ferri (Rome, 1634 - 1689) Attributable to  Translated
Description:
Ciro Ferri (Rome, 1634 – Rome, 1689) Attributable to Annunciation (probable preparatory sketch) Oil on canvas 61 x 41 cm. - Framed 79 x 59 cm. Complete details (click HERE) The work, certainly commissioned as an object of private devotion, shows the Annunciation to the Virgin Mary, an evangelical episode set here on the two figures portrayed in the foreground, the Archangel Gabriel with wings spread, portrayed with a supernatural beauty, and the Virgin; we see her portrayed here absorbed in reading a prayer book with her eyes humbly turned downwards in a sign of devotion, while a small cherub delivers the white lilies, symbol of purity and chastity. In the upper part of the composition the austere image of God the Father, with the dove irradiated with light, emblem of the Holy Spirit, surrounded by a swarm of angels fluttering among clouds full of intense glows and plays of light, in full Baroque style. The analysis of the stylistic and figurative characters of our painting show that it belongs to the Roman school of the seventeenth century, distinguished by its refined style, and capable of amalgamating the Baroque language, by definition sumptuous, with elements of classicist ancestry. In particular, observing its iconographic characters and design features, the approach to the style of Ciro Ferri (Rome 1633 - 1689) seems apposite, one of the best pupils of Pietro da Cortona, who took up his mastery of drawing and coloristic wisdom, embracing however a more classicist and delicate style. The structure of the painting clearly reveals that we are in front of a precious preparatory sketch, presumably a study for a fresco or for a larger altarpiece; this suggests that the final work was intended for the decoration of the bay of a church or a private chapel. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: The painting is sold completed with a pleasant frame and is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity and descriptive iconographic card.
