In one of the rooms of the new south wing of the National Gallery of Palazzo Barberini in Rome (room no. 37, dedicated to painting in the Capital between 1670-1750), four canvases by the painter Francesco Trevisani (1656-1746) are exhibited, depicting as many continents: Europe, Africa, Asia, and America.
These are preparatory studies, essentially oil sketches on canvas, measuring 74 x 57.5 cm, executed in 1709 on commission from Pope Clement XI Albani (1649-1721) for the mosaic decoration project on the pendentives of the chapel of the Baptistery in St. Peter's.
The Four Parts of the World are depicted with as many female figures, surrounded by attributes identifying their distinctive natural and cultural traits.
This canvas, practically identical in make, color, and size, is a variant of "America" very similar to the final solution and is part of the preparatory works created in the Master's workshop.
The painting, from an important Roman family, constitutes an interesting historical as well as artistic document.
The canvas is in excellent condition and is complete with its original frame, identical to those exhibited at Palazzo Barberini.
