Shaped chest of drawers with two drawers, Venetian area, first half of the 18th century
Description:
Important shaped chest of drawers with two drawers from the lower Veneto area, attributable to the Ferrara area, datable to the first half of the 18th century, in a moment of full maturity of the Louis XV taste, still strongly influenced by the Venetian tradition. The furniture has a moving and elegantly shaped structure, with a curved front, which gives the whole a refined balance and a scenic presence of great quality. The original, slender and moving legs are fully Louis XV, with a curvilinear pattern and well-profiled backplate, perfectly consistent with the chronology of the furniture. Entirely veneered in walnut, the chest of drawers strikes for the exceptional quality of the selection of woods and for the high executive craftsmanship. The surface is embellished with a very refined walnut veneer, arranged with great compositional sensitivity, which generates geometric designs and dynamic backgrounds exclusively through the orientation of the wood fiber. The lively and deep grain of the walnut, enriched by the presence of briar, gives the furniture an extraordinary chromatic and material richness. Everything is elegantly squared and threaded in maple, with thin and regular threads that frame the main fields, discreetly underlining the architecture of the furniture without weighing it down. The top follows the movement of the front and is also finely worked, contributing to the visual continuity of the whole; it has a slight undulation, natural and consistent with the age of the furniture, due to the physiological movement of the wood over time. From a conservation point of view, the chest of drawers is in excellent general condition: healthy and stable structure, original back, original legs; the restoration was limited to the external polishing only, respectful and non-invasive. Some small folders are replaced, with punctual and well integrated interventions. The hardware is antique, but not original. Due to the quality of the materials, the refinement of the veneer, the balance of the proportions and the state of conservation, this is a high-level furniture, representative of the best production of the Ferrara area with Venetian influence in the first half of the eighteenth century.
