Infant Bacchus
Domenico Piola (Genoa, 1627 – Genoa, April 8, 1703)
Oil on canvas
Canvas cm. 71 x 90
Frame cm. 86 x 105
Excellent condition
The painting depicts Infant Bacchus, completely nude and lying with legs spread on a sheet, drinking from a flask held in his mouth with his right hand, aided by a servant putto. The pagan deity is in an evident state of intoxication, inebriated by wine, with a face expressing an ecstatic smile.
The scene takes place outdoors with the naked bodies of the two protagonists well-lit in the foreground, in strong contrast to the background landscape with its dark sky.
The canvas is enlivened by a richly decorated Medici vase with high-relief figures, with a splendid, very lively floral arrangement next to the little drinker.
It is a very pleasant 17th-century work, faithful to the traditional predisposition of the Genoese school for this fascinating type of subject, in which Domenico Piola was the main reference.
The painting should be placed within the production of his workshop, which specialized precisely in allegorical, mythological, and religious scenes featuring putti, cherubs, and angelic faces, always suitable for display in the luxurious palaces of the great Ligurian city.
The canvas is in excellent condition, complete with a magnificent, finely carved and gilded gilded frame with vegetal motifs.
