Dawn in the Lazio countryside with travelers and figures from the second half of the 17th century.
Description:
A remarkable oil painting on canvas measuring 98cm x 72cm in height (120cm x 95cm including the gilded and contemporary frame). It was very likely executed in the workshop of the celebrated landscape painter Gaspard Dughet (Rome 1615-1675). This attribution is especially supported by looking at his most important pupil, Crescenzio Onofri. In our painting, we can discern figures with a sketch-like proportion and a subdued color palette, typical of Onofri. Further examination reveals his style in the treatment of natural elements and the landscape composition, which is asymmetrical and features precise architectural references characteristic of his works. This rural landscape, set at dawn, depicts travelers on their way. On the left, a hunter with his greyhound appears, while further in the woods, a shepherd with his dog is seen bivouacking, watching his flock descend the ridge. The landscape is rendered so faithfully that it evokes typical scenes from the areas near Orte, likely identifiable in the background. The painting is in excellent condition and can be immediately used for decoration. However, professional cleaning of the canvas could reveal more vibrant colors and cerulean tones, characteristic of Dughet, as well as other naturalistic details, as the canvas shows yellowing due to accumulated dirt over time. The painting comes with a beautiful gilded frame from the late 17th century. A certificate of authenticity is attached to the sale.
