Battle of Knights
School of the late 17th/early 18th century.
The painting depicts a battle scene between armed knights caught in full motion, some in turbans and oriental garments, suggesting a possible clash between Christian and Ottoman armies, a theme dear to 17th-century battle painting. In the center, a fallen white horse captures attention, accentuating the drama of the action. In the background on the right, other armed groups can be glimpsed, while a landscape view opens up in the background, lending great depth to the entire scene. The strong use of chiaroscuro highlights the figures and horses, enhancing the pathos. In this painting, the influences of the painting of Jacques Courtois, Francesco Simonini, or authors from the Flemish school active in Italy are evident.
