The artwork reflects the trends spread throughout Europe by Jakob Ferdinand Voet, a Flemish painter who established himself primarily as a portraitist, and had a wide following both among artists of his period and in subsequent periods. His half-bust portraits place all the attention on the subject, who emerges from a neutral and dark background. The portrait of a gentleman presented here has previously undergone restoration and relining. It is presented in an adapted antique frame.
