Link: https://www.antichitaischia.it/it/prodotto/-battaglia--cristiani-contro-i-turchi- The painting depicts a brutal battle between Turkish and Christian cavalry. The extremely fierce clashes are described in the foreground, with great attention to the rendering of details and the sensation of impetuous movement. The canvas shows all the unmistakable characteristics of Antonio Calza's famous "Battles" (Verona 1653-1725), with notable affinities to the works of his master Jacques Courtois of Burgundy, from whom he drew his pictorial and scenographic technique. The work published here is distinguished by the multiplicity of fights scattered throughout the composition with an exceptional dynamic effect, revealing the author's great predisposition for depicting battles with clashes between knights. The beautiful size and excellent condition of the canvas make it very pleasant and easy to place. It is complete with its original gilded frame. Biography of the author Antonio Calza was born in Verona in 1653, the son of a goldsmith named Giovanni. However, he immediately became passionate about painting and did not want to follow his father's profession. At the age of eleven, in conflict with his father, he fled to Bologna, where he entered the school of Carlo Cignani, who advised him to dedicate himself to battle and landscape paintings. He later moved to Rome, where he perfected his painting by studying the master Jacques Courtois of Burgundy closely, copying his works. In 1675, he reconciled with his father and returned to his hometown, where he married a wealthy widow of 88 years who, upon her death, left him a considerable inheritance. Returning to Italy, he was thus able to open a prestigious workshop in Verona, where he soon became famous, starting to produce numerous works with the help of his students. Having involuntarily committed a murder, he had to leave Verona and, settling in Bologna, was considered from that moment on as a "Bolognese painter". Exonerated years later from all charges, he was later able to return to Verona, where he died on April 18, 1725. He was buried in the church of S. Matteo and declared a "Bolognese painter" in the inscription on his tombstone. Various works attributed to him are exhibited in the museums of Verona, Bologna, and Brescia, all quite different in style and quality; among the most important, the "Battle" kept in the Pinacoteca Tosio-Martinengo in Brescia should be considered.
