Vienna, 1825-30 around. Extraordinary Biedermeier Viennese daybed, with sober and elegant lines
Description:
Vienna, 1825-30 around. Extraordinary Biedermeier Viennese daybed, with sober and elegant lines, inlaid in blond walnut burl. A line of refined elegance and incredible modernity. See, in fact, in the last photo of this card, our fanciful computer elaboration where the work is inserted in a context of high-end modern furniture; a surprising "modernity" for a work conceived two centuries ago. It is high Viennese cabinetry that could also be attributed to the production of Joseph Danhauser or his immediate circle. This is due not only to the ingenious line and stylistic details, but also to the masterful executive technique with strongly curved sides. To obtain such a pronounced curvature, the ingenious cabinetmaker, after having created the staved structure of the sides with soft wood, applied the walnut burl veneers in the most curved points, manually thinned and then mirrored in the characteristic way of Viennese furniture of the Empire and the Biedermeier, on a first layer of veneering made crosswise with elastic essence, probably beech. This complex and ingenious technique of "thinning and double veneering" served to avoid fracture of the veneers in the most curved points. The work is in very good condition of conservation and integrity; it is in first patina, with shellac finish applied with a pad using museum standard technique. It is finally upholstered with the original technique of the time, without the use of springs. The upholstery of the backrest is original and intact; it has been sanitised and covered by us. Underneath the splendid satin "antique green" Juaquard fabric with rosette motifs, lies, protected, the original fabric of the period, which we have specially preserved with state-of-the-art conservation techniques. The lateral rosette motifs are carved and gilded with leaf gold. Restored and consolidated with a shellac finish applied with a pad using museum standard technique. A similar work, with similar lines also veneered in walnut burl on softwood and beech, owned by the national collection of the Vienna Furniture Museum, from Schonbruenn Castle, was exhibited at the international exhibition "Biedermeier, the invention of simplicity", Albertina, Vienna, 2007, catalogue II - 63 (see photo at the bottom of the page). Width cm. 197. Depth cm. 81, height cm. 82. The seat is at cm. 44 in height; it is cm. 155 wide (135 between the armrests), cm.71 deep.
