This extraordinary and spectacular battle scene is distinguished by its exceptional panoramic vision which, thanks to its expanse, depicts cavalry clashes with heated duels in the foreground and the siege of the fortified city on the horizon.
The large size of the canvas indeed allows the Author to express his considerable capabilities in describing the details of the frenetic dramatic moments that characterize this exciting genre of works.
The painting unequivocally presents all the stylistic characteristics of the famous painter of French origin Jacques Courtois, one of the most accomplished battle painters of the 17th century.
This important work effectively represents a valid example of the pictorial characteristics that are part of his repertoire. In particular, the hand-to-hand duels, both with firearms and with bladed weapons, the inimitable contorted figures of the white and black horses, the distant images of fortresses, towers, and walls of fortified cities.
The comparison with the splendid large Battle exhibited in the Prado Museum in Madrid leaves no doubt about the identical stylistic and chromatic analogies (see link), as well as a painting that passed through Pandolfini with the same pictorial characteristics.
