Vienna, 1815 - 20. Extraordinary "tulip" table from the early Viennese Biedermeier period, attributed to Joseph Danhauser
Description:
Vienna, 1815 - 20. Extraordinary "tulip" table from the early Viennese Biedermeier period, attributed to Joseph Danhauser or the close circle of cabinetmakers and designers close to him. A museum-worthy work, of extraordinary "modernity" for the era, which seems to anticipate by over 120 years the creations of the great architect Eero Saarinen, who himself was probably inspired by a similar table (see photo with juxtaposed miniatures - N.B. = Saarinen's table is obviously not ours and for sale, but its photo is published for cultural reasons only). The sail table is in practically intact condition, including hinges and locking mechanism, and is finely veneered in blond walnut burl of incredible quality, with mirrored veneers arranged to create decorative patterns with the grain, as is typical of the high Viennese cabinetmaking of the Biedermeier period. Specifically, a star is drawn in the top. Elegant maple threads in the base brilliantly interrupt the lines, streamlining the work. The back of the top is veneered in blond maple burl. There are also details in ebonized maple, and the edges of the top are veneered in Brazilian rosewood, as is typical of the most luxurious and parade pieces commissioned by the high nobility. It should be remembered that, in the period immediately following the Congress of Vienna, the importation of exotic woods had been interrupted. The few remnants were extremely expensive. This aspect also confirms a dating close to 1815 and therefore to the immediately preceding Empire style. Consolidated and finished with shellac buffer applied on the original patina with museum standard technique. It measures cm. 130 in diameter and 78 in height. Of incredible class and elegance even when associated with high-end modern furniture. Observe the incredible "modernity" of these furnishings made more than 200 years ago. This following image is a fantasy graphic elaboration, obtained by virtually inserting the tulip table from the early Viennese Biedermeier period of around 1820 in a context of modern furniture.
