Vienna 1815-20. Elegant tea table with a sail-shaped top in absolute integrity, possibly by Joseph Danhauser
Description:
Vienna 1815-20. Elegant sail-shaped tea table in absolute integrity, possibly by Joseph Danhauser or a Viennese cabinetmaker from his circle, finely veneered in incredibly high-quality walnut burl, with maple on the underside of the top (a typical construction feature of Joseph Danhauser's furniture). An object of refined simplicity and austere elegance, foreshadowing the lines of 20th-century rationalism. Diameter 90 cm. Height 80 cm. In conditions of integrity, in original patina with shellac finish applied with a pad using museum-standard techniques. A magnificent work with a design that "conquers time," with a sober and minimalist elegant line, also excellent for combining with high-end modern furnishings for a unique, exclusive, and refined elegant ensemble. The warm golden amber color of the antique blond walnut patina with a real shellac pad finish. The master cabinetmakers of the Biedermeier period knew the locations where the best trees grew and kept the secret. To obtain veneers with such beautiful figures, they also knew the best points of the tree and cut the parts with great skill, obtaining wood effects that constitute the particular appeal of true Biedermeier furniture and represent a uniqueness and excellence in the world of high antique furniture of all eras.
Joseph Ulrich Danhauser (1780-1829), a great Viennese cabinetmaker, sculptor, and designer, documented his product range in a vast designed catalogue, parts of which (c.a 2,500) have survived and are now kept in the MAK (Austrian Museum of Applied Arts in Vienna). This catalogue includes, among others, 153 models of chairs, 56 sofas, 179 types of chandeliers, and 124 draperies. All these models were numbered consecutively. He boasted a clientele of rank from all over the Austrian monarchy and Germany. The exceptional quality and uniqueness of Danhauser as a furniture creator resides in the harmonious combination of concreteness and abstraction, functionality and emotion. Thus, he assumed the role of mediator between individuality and anonymity and became one of the most important inspirations for the modern avant-garde movement. The Danhauser manufactory was founded in 1814. It is a point of reference in the history of design and furniture. His very rare original creations that have survived are kept in a few museums, castles, important antique dealers, or prestigious private collections, mostly noble.
