The painting, besides being extremely pleasant, is particularly evocative and describes the scene of the Nativity set in a large Arcadian-style setting.
In fact, the event itself, already very pleasant, takes on an unusual but truly fascinating aspect in a broad pictorial context.
The result of this interesting compositional solution is a splendid work that, although presenting the characteristics of landscape painting, offers us a delicate devotional cue. The inclusion of religious subjects, with allegorical or mythological figures that blend into Arcadian landscapes, is one of the compositional peculiarities of the works of Andrea Locatelli, a prominent Roman painter of the first half of the 18th century.
His workshop successfully produced splendid canvases of refined taste and bright colors, rich in vegetation, often depicting ruins, highly appreciated, especially by noble Roman families.
The painting, together with its pendant, clearly presents all the prerogatives of his production and is easily attributable to his hand.
The two works are complete with their beautiful original gilded frames.
Perfect condition without restorations or repainting.
As terms of comparison, we can point out the stringent affinities with works by Locatelli such as the "Landscape with shepherds and herds" formerly in the Colombo collection in Milan (Busiri Vici, n. 63) or the two "Lazio landscapes with figures" of the Galleria Pallavicini in Rome (Ibid., nn. 135-136).
